Did you know that East Grinstead was the birthplace of Mid-Sussex Timber? The proximity of the railway line – timber was transported by rail back in 1929 – made it an efficient and effective location. However East Grinstead is no longer our main headquarters. That title goes to our Forest Row branch! In 1966 we moved 3 miles south and set up camp at our 3-acre site in Forest Row, so we didn’t go too far, but our continued growth meant we simply needed more space.
Fabulous facts about Forest Row
The East Sussex town of Forest Row is uniquely placed very close to the borders of the three neighbouring counties: West Sussex, Surrey and Kent. Although our 4 sites are very close to each other as the crow flies, you actually have to cross the boarder of East Sussex and West Sussex as you travel between them.
Although Forest Row is, for the most part, a quiet and quaint Sussex village, it has had its fair share of time in the spotlight. In 1963, the former President of the United States of America, John F. Kennedy, attended mass at the ‘Our Lady of the Forest Church’. This was the first Roman Catholic Mass at which an American president had been present in England, so no wonder it went down in history. Kennedy’s visit was commemorated with a memorial plaque after his assassination in November 1963, just months after his visit to Forest Row.
It is quite well known that the nearby Ashdown Forest inspired the Winnie the Pooh books, and many people make the pilgrimage to play Pooh sticks under the famous bridge. A further fabulous fact that often slips under the radar, is that Forest Row was the inspiration behind one of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes short stories! Forest Row is lucky to have such a rich and varied literary history.

You can choose from bricks, blocks, cement, plaster, drainage accessories, paving slabs and more. Our Forest Row site is also home to our modern milling machinery. This technology is capable of producing any profile or bespoke moulding that you can think of, something we are incredibly proud to offer.
Also at Forest Row we have our Treatment Plant which is made up of 3 separate vessels able to pressure treat in Green or Brown water-based solutions and a clear solvent option. These treatment solutions are perfect for extending the life of both internal and externally used timber. Another benefit is we can offer the treatment service to customers for their own timber as well as our own stock.
